Exploring the Fitzgerald Marine Reserve
I did plan on exploring the Fitzgerald Marine Reserve because one of the locals told me it had some fabulous tide pools to explore, and there were also seals lounging on the beach that you can observe from a distance.
I knew I wouldn’t be allowed along the beach with the dogs in tow, but thought I’d be able to walk along the coastal bluff trails, but the signs at the entrance to the beach and the bluffs trail made it quite clear that dogs weren’t allowed.
So we had to opt for Plan B.
We headed along the nearby coastal trail, which is actually inland from the coast and took us through a wooded area that led to Cypress Avenue.
This was the only part of the area near the Reserve that allowed dogs, and even though they had to be on a lead both of the pups didn’t seem to mind. I think they were just happy to be out and about.

The Seal Cove steps are right by Cypress Avenue, and you can head down them to get into the Marine Reserve.
Return Trip to the Marine Reserve
I did plan on returning to the Fitzgerald Marine Reserve on another day at low tide, so that I could explore the tide pools. But every time I left the house … I just couldn’t resist taking the pups with me. They just love exploring the local area.
They don’t care if they go to the local beach or hike in the trails in a nearby park, or dart around the woods — they just want to be out and about. It so much fun to see the pair of them be filled with so much enthusiasm. Dog lovers are really are spoilt for choice for walking destistination around this local area, and having these two charges had made me a lot more prone to tearing myself away from the computer … and heading out for another walk instead.
If you’re visiting the area .. the Marine Reserve comes highly recommended by all the locals I spoke too … and there’s a small office located in the carpark that provides you with the low tides for the week so that you can plan your tide pool exploration adventures.
What a lovely little pocket of the world!
Yes it’s such an interesting and laid back part of California. Really loved my time there.
