5 pens go sketching in Coimbra

Going away for a few days with this months uninspiring sketchbook. So sketched my art packing list as a reminder of what I packed. And when I get back I’ll make a note of what I used and which pen just came along for the ride.

  • Red Micron for filling in date text I add to my pages
  • Black fine liner in case my Lamy runs out of ink
  • Derwent light grey and UniPin dark grey fine liners to add depth variety in a sketch
  • Lamy fountain pen with a fine nib and black sketch ink.

I love my Yellow Lamy Safari fountain pen with an extra fine nib (I also have a spare medium nib). It’s been with me the longest as it was the first pen I purchased to sketch. But then I didn’t use it for a few years. Now it’s getting a lot of use. I have lots of fountain pens. And use different inks in them. But my go to is black waterproof ink.

I like using this sketch ink by Rohrer & Klingner. They have a range of waterproof ink for fountain pens, which is incredibly lightfast. Their ink is created with nano pigments that enables the ink to flow freely and dry quickly.

When I adopted Lilly and Thea I was in search of an ideal dark grey to sketch with, but I’m not in love with either of these, although I still use them. But once I’ve used one of these bottles up I’m going to give the DeAtrementis Urban Grey ink a whirl. I like the look of its lighter and warmer feel.
